10 HVAC Tips to Keep Your Home Cool This Summer

The scorching summer heat demands a well-functioning HVAC system to keep your home cool and comfortable. But how can you ensure your system is up to the task? Let’s look at some important tips for summer that will help you beat the heat and save energy.

1) Schedule an inspection with a professional HVAC technician to clean and service your system.

This will not only improve its efficiency but also prolong its lifespan. During the inspection, the technician will check for any leaks, clean the condenser coils, and ensure that all components are in proper working condition. They will also lubricate moving parts and replace any worn-out belts or filters.

2) Insulate properly for energy efficiency.

Insulating your home effectively will help keep the cool air in and the hot air out. Check for any cracks or gaps around doors and windows and seal them to prevent any air leaks. Additionally, consider insulating your attic and walls to further improve energy efficiency.

3) Optimize your thermostat settings to significantly reduce your energy consumption and lower your monthly bills.

Set the temperature a few degrees higher when you’re away from home or at night. This simple adjustment can make a big difference in energy savings.

4) Consider investing in a programmable thermostat that allows you to set different temperature settings for different times of the day.

For example, you can program the thermostat to lower the temperature before you wake up in the morning and increase it when you leave for work. This way, you can enjoy a cool and comfortable home when you need it without wasting energy when you don’t.

5) Clean and replace filters to improve the efficiency of your HVAC system.

Over time, dust and debris can accumulate in the filters, restricting airflow and reducing efficiency. This can lead to increased energy consumption and decreased cooling performance. Make it a habit to clean or replace your air filters regularly. Check the manufacturer’s recommendations for how often the filters should be cleaned or replaced. By doing so, you can ensure proper airflow, improve indoor air quality, and extend the lifespan of your HVAC system.

6) Consider using ceiling fans to circulate the air.

Ceiling fans create a wind-chill effect, making you feel cooler without having to lower the temperature on your thermostat. They are also fairly easy to install yourself or by a professional electrician. Remember to turn off the fans when you leave the room to save energy.

7) Avoid using heat-generating appliances during the hottest parts of the day.

Appliances such as ovens, dryers, and dishwashers can increase the temperature in your home, causing your HVAC system to work harder. Instead, use these appliances in the early morning or late evening when the outdoor temperatures are cooler.

8) Take advantage of natural ventilation.

Open windows and doors during the cooler parts of the day to let fresh air in and allow hot air to escape. This can help reduce the load on your HVAC system and provide natural cooling.

9) Ensure that all vents and registers are clean and unobstructed.

Furniture or drapes blocking the vents can hinder airflow and reduce the effectiveness of your HVAC system. Additionally, consider using fans strategically to improve air circulation in rooms that tend to get warmer.

10) Relax!

Stress only makes you hotter…if you need same-day service on your air conditioner let the professionals at Fitch handle it so you can stay cool!
